The are eight islands( Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa), and several smaller ones.  A fascinating variety of terrains and micro climates, it is often used as a location for films to emulate everything from Mars to rain forests.
